10th May 2013
The Vinistra wine festival and competition, is held in the Roman costal town of Poreč in Istria within the first two weeks of May each year. The Vinistra 2013 wine competition results makes interesting reading as local producers vie for national recognition for their wines.
Kabola claimed an impressive cluster of medals for their wines this year:
Gold Medal for Kabola Teran 2009 (2nd in Teran category) and was awarded “The Best Autocthonous Wine for the most mature Teran”.
Gold Medal for their Kabola Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 (2nd place)
Silver Medal for their Kabola Merlot 2009 (3rd equal). No surprise here as this wine was proclaimed as the best Merlot ever tasted by one Wine Circle member in front of 136 guests at Phyllis Court on 8th May 2013, including the Croatian Ambassador.
Gold Medal for Kabola Muškat Momjanski 2012 (1st place). Absolutely no surprise here. I tasted the 2012 from the large barrel at Kabola’s winery in April and it was incredibly intense in aroma, flavour and finish – stunning.
Silver Medal for Franc Arman Chardonnay 2012 (8th equal). I tasted this wine from the steel vat in April and it had the same consistent high quality of each previous vintage.
Gold Medal for Franc Arman Cabernet Franc 2009 (2nd equal). Franc Arman’s Cabernet Franc’s are always a delight and offer a difference to other regions as the vines are in Terra Rossa soil and the fruit is beautifully prominent.
Silver Medal for Pilato Chardonnay 2012 (8th equal) I tasted this wine pre-blended and it really was a very beautiful Chardonnay and a worthy medal winner.
Bronze for Pilato Pinot Bijeli 2012
Well done to all producers who won medals at Vinistra 2013. I hope I will be able to make it in person to the festival next year, 2014.
